CSF-NYC was launched in 1998 as part of the Children's Scholarship Fund (CSF), a national organization that was founded by Ted Forstmann and the late John Walton. Since its founding CSF has provided scholarships for more than 96,000 children.

Currently, CSF-NYC provides scholarships for 8,762 students in the five boroughs of New York City. These students attend more than 300 private schools (including Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, Islamic, and independent schools). The average scholarship amount is $1,624 and the average private school tuition is $3,038.
